Stress Management

Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the ever increasing demands of life. Surveys show that most of us experience challenges with stress at some point during the year. Stress is not an illness itself, but it can cause serious illness if it isn't addressed. When you experience stress or when your brain perceives a threat, it signals your body to release a burst of hormones to fuel your capacity for a response. This has been labeled the "fight-or-flight" response. Once the threat is gone, your body is meant to return to a normal relaxed state.

With all the comforts and amenities the technology has brought in, people - whether they are students, housewives, professionals or senior citizens - find it difficult to lead a peaceful, contented, happy and meaningful life. This is due to the competitive environment, ever increasing expectations and wrong lifestyle, inability to balance work and family life. When our efforts to effectively manage ourselves fail, we start experiencing frustration, worry, fear, anger, insomnia and negative thinking. These are the initial signals of stress.

Our inability to recognize and manage these early signals in a positive and creative way leads to low energy and depression. Then people experience stress that affects physical and mental health. The major symptoms of stress are:

  • Inability to concentrate and take sound decisions
  • Memory lapses
  • Irritability or angry outbursts
  • Strained relations with others
  • State of anxiety or irrational fear
  • Erratic breathing
  • Sweaty palms or stiff jaw or dry mouth

Persistent stress can lead to headache, migraine, backache, insomnia, high BP, heart disease, ulcer or even cancer.

It's important to recognise the symptoms of stress early since it will help you figure out ways of coping and save you from adopting unhealthy coping methods, such as drinking or smoking. That's why stress management is so important because it will help prevent it getting worse and potentially causing serious complications, such as high blood pressure.
